Unique lodging is one of the best ways to get off-the-beaten-path and feel a little less touristy during travels. One special form of lodging is a treehouse rental. In my research on the most unique, romantic, wow-factor place to stay in Colorado with my husband for our anniversary, the TreeHouse at the Highland Haven Creekside Inn kept popping up. So, obviously, we needed to go to Evergreen to see what all the hubbub was about.

Jason and I love our Parental Escapes. We are two very busy parents in our blended family of four sons. Therefore, we plan for these Escapes for weeks, if not months. We know that no matter how busy life gets and how disconnected we may feel from each other, we always have an Escape to look forward to as a designated time to reconnect. It’s our chance to say, “Kids… we are going away to do something super cool without you because we do super cool things with you every day. You’re welcome.”
For our wedding anniversary, we really wanted to do something special. We love the great outdoors and the rustic mountains we call home. However, to honor another year of marriage, we really wanted to treat ourselves to something more decadent than our usual outdoorsy Escape. The Highland Haven Creekside Inn was a perfect setting to have both decadence and rusticness, and we were thrilled to be gifted with a stay. It was almost like “glamping,” but up in the trees.

Staying in a cabin in the Rocky Mountains is touristy. Staying in a luxury treehouse is touristish.

The Foothills of Denver, Colorado: Evergreen

It was only about an hour and a half drive from our home to Evergreen, Colorado: That’s close enough for a one-night getaway but far enough away for it to feel special and like an actual getaway. Evergreen is a quaint mountain town nestled in the Rocky Mountain foothills, with just over 9,000 residents. Its location just off of I-70 makes it a close 30-minute drive to downtown Denver and only a 15-minute drive to the popular concert venue, Red Rocks Amphitheatre. But, we weren’t looking for Denver proximity on our anniversary weekend. We were just looking for a romantic weekend away from the tourists and the people, out in the woods.

Highland Haven Creekside Inn

This award-winning property has 18 different rooms of varying sizes and purposes. Some are ideal as a bridal suite, some allow dogs, and some are perfect for families. We wanted to stay in the opulent TreeHouse, designed for romance and appealing to childlike wonder. But, being a curious person (notice I didn’t say nosey…), I peeked into a couple of the other rooms just to see what they were like. I can say that I’m thrilled we got to stay in the TreeHouse, but we could have had a romantic weekend in any of the other rooms, too. (Oh, who am I kidding? We can even have a romantic weekend in a Route 66 roadside motel!)

We were greeted by the friendly staff at check-in, who helped us make dinner plans and then encouraged us to take advantage of the complimentary Happy Hour by taking a glass of wine and a warm, gooey chocolate chip cookie back as we explored the TreeHouse. No need to twist our arms!

The Charming TreeHouse

The TreeHouse itself was built on top of large cedar poles (because, let’s face it… trees native to Colorado just can’t hold the weight of a three-story treehouse. I’ve tried.). When we entered the TreeHouse with the Alice-in-Wonderland-esque key, soft music was playing, champagne on ice, and fresh flowers throughout. Whimsical treehouse paintings and photographs adorned the walls, antique stained glass hung from windows, and every nook and cranny of the space held something charming, quaint, cutesy, and I dare say “magical.”

Obviously, so much thought and attention went into the placement of every little detail. And, when I say every little detail, I mean that we spent over an hour just looking and exploring and proudly showing off our finds to each other from this incredible space. Therefore, I won’t ruin the fun of discovering them by listing my finds here because you will want to find them yourself! However, I will say that my heart went, “Aww!” when I found a secret stash of marbles… because what treehouse doesn’t have a secret stash of treasured marbles?

From doing my research, one of the main draws for this TreeHouse for me was its beautiful aspen canopy bed, crowned with a sizeable Swarovski-crystal chandelier. I’d seen photos of this bed all over the internet and social media because it’s quite Instagram-worthy, and in person, the centerpiece of this room did not disappoint. It was almost too beautiful to sleep on. Almost. (Not going to lie, I slept very well.) With a gas-powered fireplace that put out a lot of heat, it left me wanting to return in the winter to snuggle up on that gorgeous bed in the snow. (Mental note: Winter Parental Escape – back to the TreeHouse.)

Even though the TreeHouse maintains its rustic charm, it is not without high-tech amenities. The room had a kitchenette with a teak root sink, microwave, mini-fridge, and Keurig coffee-maker. There was a stunning petrified wood sink in the bathroom and an artistically laid river rock path on the floor leading to a steam shower. Additionally, the top floor had a romantic two-person champagne-bubbles jetted tub and a mini-bar surrounded by windows on three sides.

Highland Haven’s Outdoor Art Display

After exploring our new digs, we grabbed another glass of wine and explored the property. We sat under the metal-art gazebo by the namesake creek and took in the smells of fresh pine while the creek babbled to us. There were hidden pieces of art amongst the trees. In fact, we missed some of the art in broad daylight and didn’t notice it until nightfall from the TreeHouse balcony, when some of the art was subtly illuminated. Just like the inside of the TreeHouse, the property would take a lot of exploring to find it all.

Dinner at Murphy’s Mountain Grill

For dinner, we walked five minutes to downtown Evergreen for several dining and shopping options. We ate at Murphy’s Mountain Grill, where we dove face-first into Citrus Grilled Chicken Plantain Nachos, the MURPH burger, the Dirty Frenchman Chicken Burger, and, as if that wasn’t enough, took an order of Chocolate Chip Bread Pudding back to the TreeHouse for a bedtime snack. Murphy’s also had an impressive array of hand-muddled cocktails, so naturally, we partook.

Treetop Jacuzzi Tub

After that, we returned to the TreeHouse. The romance continued as we sipped champagne in the top-floor jetted tub. Small battery-powered candles aligned the bathtub. (You didn’t think we’d be foolish enough to light real candles in a treehouse, did you?) We did not forget about our dessert from Murphy’s and took it out to the balcony to eat in the provided bathrobes. Looking down on the property at night made us realize how dense we were to miss so much art in the daylight. Colorado’s night sky was clear and full of stars, and the temperature was just perfect in June to be outside past dark in a robe. The TreeHouse’s position also made it feel private enough that we even could wear our robes outside. Although maybe that’s just us…

Highland Haven’s Complimentary Breakfast

Highland Haven offers to bring guests breakfast in bed, and as tempting as that was, we really just wanted to eat outside at the beautifully landscaped picnic tables. We are early risers with way too much energy to lay around in bed. One of our favorite summertime rituals at home on the weekend is coffee together on the back porch; therefore, we didn’t want to break from that.

The homemade breakfast and coffee included fruit, granola, yogurt, hot cinnamon rolls, garlic potatoes, and breakfast sandwiches on biscuits. While we were eating, we had the opportunity to chat up one of the owners, Gail Riley, who was elbow-deep in landscaping duty. Jason geeks out on all things landscaping and gardening, so he chatted her up. She was sweet enough to appreciate his enthusiasm and gave him a clipping of an Engleman Ivy vine that turns red in the fall that is now enjoying its new life in our backyard at home. It was refreshing to see that the owners are still, after 40 years, so involved in the daily particulars required to maintain such a beautiful property.

I really believe that love is in the details, and this TreeHouse was clearly made with a lot of love.
